Soil Testing
“WHY DO I NEED MY SOIL TESTED?
To find out; “What’s going on down
there”? We need to know the “health of the soil” The whole foundation of an organic lawn care program is feeding/improving the soil. That’s what your grass in growing in.
Your lawn’s soil is either alive or dead. Synthetic fertilizers do nothing to improve the soil. Our organic fertilizers, along with our soil amendments and Bio-stimulants will over time, make even the poorest of soils become fertile and productive again.
A soil test will tell us:
- Is your soil Clay, Sandy or Loam?
- Is your soil acidic?
- Is your soil contaminated?
- How compacted (Hard) is your soil?
- What is your “Organic Matter content” (Topsoil)
- If your soil is Clay, the most common of New York Soils, it can also be compacted, unfertile and unproductive. With this type of soil, the grass on top may be unhealthy, thin and full of weeds or crabgrass
- If your soil is Sandy, it will be very pervious. Water will run quickly through. Fertilizer green-up will be poor and spotty
- If your soil is Loamy, then you have excellent grass growing conditions.
- Acidic soils is low Ph (not good) Your lawn may be very weedy (See weeds) and Green-up from any fertilization will be spotty and inconsistent.
- If your soil test shows “Excessive chlorides” (Salts) then your grass will dry out fast, have constant discoloring. Note: Most of these “Salts” comes from the usage of synthetic fertilizers.
- If your soil is very hard (compacted) then your grasses roots grows shallow, grass cannot spread, weeds and crabgrass flourishes.
- If you have a low organic matter reading, Then your soil is un-fertile, un-healthy and un-productive.
After a soil test is performed by Healthy & Happy lawns Inc. you will also receive a more detailed explanation on your test. Now that we know “What’s needed” we will then tailor your lawn care program to this report. (Also see poor soils).
To change & improve any poor soils it will take time depending upon the deficiencies in your soil. It may take from 1-3 years before improvements take hold. Obviously, you will not see this happen. But what you will see is your grass get greener, stronger & healthier.
Note: Creating for you an “organicially growing lawn’ that no longer is dependent upon the traditional chemicals, is putting your lawn through a complete and thoroughly “De-tox” process. Similar to a human drug addict being “weaned” off the drugs.
